I'm not really in to reading others' posts because I never seem to find the time (sorry to all of my wonderful blogging friends...just having an honest moment here...) and I can't really imagine why anybody would be interested in what goes on around our household. With that said....so many tiny, incredible things (well, "incredible" in the eyes of a mother) happen around this house daily that if I don't record it somewhere, I'm surely going to forget. So, here's my attempt at reviving this blog....

Since my last post we have been blessed with a new baby boy, hence the title change. With the new addition to our family, little Asher, and our "Levi Buttonfly" gloriously thrashing around in his "terrible 2s" (as everybody likes to refer to this happy state in our lives...), I'm learning more and more that it isn't only our boys that have some growing up to do. God is showing us daily (and sometimes hourly, unfortunately....) that we have so much room to grow and change as parents, spouses, and as His children. Despite the growing pains, it has been a wonderful journey so far! Hopefully with the revival of this blog, I can share all about these growing pains and, most importantly, our moments of joy as He is raising the Rollins'.

Hiatus...

Yes, it has been quite a while since my last post and, to be honest, I have enjoyed my blogging hiatus. I have my reasons, but couldn't resist posting on my growing boy.

In the past few months, Levi has been growing and learning so much. He talks nonstop and always has something very important to tell me...sometimes at a few decibels higher than what I prefer. I believe I posted, many moons ago, about our new arrival we're anxiously awaiting this spring...well, in preparations for two young children, we've made some transitions in our home and with Levi. He has been in a "big boy bed" for the past couple of months and has been paci free since September. With both of these, he has transitioned so well, which I hope is a preview to how he will do with sharing us with "Tummy" (this is how Levi answers when I ask him what the baby's name is). We also introduced the potty this summer and pull-ups and Thomas underwear this week. We'll see how quickly we progress with this....I'm thinking much, much slower! I couldn't be prouder of my "big boy," and despite my excitement with his independence and growing up, it is sort of hard to watch him change so quickly. I'm 24 weeks and the days are ticking away until Levi is a big brother. I'm so thrilled about our growing family and excited to see how God molds us as parents and changes our family throughout the years to come...I'm expecting it will be quite a ride!

PLEASE COME!!!!

Saturday night, Monkeez Brew is hosting an African Ya-Ya market to raise money for Chris and Lindy Thompson's adoption. Please come out from 5-9pm and shop for all sorts of handmade goodies from Kenya. There will be scarves, handbags, handmade wooden bowls and spoons, jewelry, nativity sets, aprons, children's puzzles, and more, more, MORE!!! Levi has also developed an obsession with "iick" (music). He becomes a bit anxious if I don't immediately turn up the volume in the car. He has started requesting "Jesus" songs for me to sing and enjoys saying his prayers at night. He isn't as thrilled about taking time out for blessings at mealtimes....seeing his steaming food on his plate tends to be a distraction. Levi has also taken several trips to the potty to "pee-pee" and, on a couple of occasions, he's tried the other....which scares him a bit. Sometimes, when his pee-pee doesn't come, he tries to encourage it by saying "c'mon pee-pee." Believe it or not, this tactic actually works!

Some other news in our family, which I have neglected to post, is that Levi is going to be a big brother sometime in April! We are super excited about experiencing all of this over again....it has been a truly blessed ride so far...

Levi after playing in my pots. What is it they say little boys are made of? There may be some truth to that....

Ahhhaaaa! Deep breath...

Today is my first official day of summer break. I think I might just sit here and bask in that for a while. Although I usually stay much busier when I'm not working, I enjoy it more because I'm operating on my clock. There's something to say for that...we all love independence, right?

A lot has happened since my last post...which I'm terribly ashamed that it has been so long since then. We have moved in to our new (really, really old) house and are enjoying every minute of it. I think we're enjoying it too much. We still have random boxes, with the most random assortment of things in them, lying around and we keep playing around in our yard and on our porch instead of finishing moving in. I have been pretty good about purging needless stuff every year, however, we still manage to have a ridiculous amount of unnecessary things. It was somewhat embarrassing to watch our friends move all of these ridiculous things. Even though most things have been put in their place, I still can't put my hands on some stuff...like my perfume and our Cuckoo clock. Hmmm, maybe they're in the same box? Anyways, I'm sure I'll be posting more (now that I'm home for the summer - yay!) about the joys of being a homeowner and updating an 82 year old house.

We also said our goodbyes to Chris and Lindy as they headed back to Nairobi, Kenya. As always when they visit, I wished time had stood still. They stayed with us, prepared meals with us, and entertained us with their stories and humor. Levi really enjoyed entertaining his Uncle "Kssss" and Aunt "Indy." It has been almost two weeks since they left and he still calls out their names. I know where he is coming from, I miss them too. Here's some pics they took while in town....

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://levibuttonfly.blogspot.com/2009/06/ahhhaaaa-deep-breath.html' title='Ahhhaaaa! So, if any of you (who are so fortunate to live in the great metropolis of Thomasville, NC) see us out and about in "Toot-Toot," you'll know how badly we've been waiting to get out of the apartment and out of hibernation. Also, please don't honk, I can be a bit jumpy! It isn't his best performance, however, you get the point. Unfortunately, he hasn't heard many of these animals, he's just imitating the poor attempts of his parents. Funny what we do to entertain our children, isn't it? You can imagine how often we abuse Levi's new found interest in animal sounds for our own enjoyment. This is the perfect example of what happens to a baby who gets his first taste of sugar. Just to give you all a heads up, this video is a bit lengthy, so feel free to stop the clip after you see Levi's sugar shakes. I'm mainly posting this video for Uncle Chris and Aunt Linders who were present (in spirit) all the way from Kenya. We miss you both (terribly) and wished you guys could have been there in person. Love you! Enjoy!

Oh, one more thing, the cake is a monkey's head...in case you're wondering. Levi is looking at his face, but for those of you watching, it looks like a large brown mound...not exactly something you picture for a one year old's birthday...just FYI...

Snow Day #2...

Here we are with another snow day and no snow! Just another typical North Carolina winter....strange, and apparently, unpredictable. We had a snow day a couple of weeks ago and I forgot to post pics of Levi's first snow. His high chair is by the window and that morning, while eating his oatmeal, he kept looking outside and talking about the snow. After breakfast, I kept finding him straining to look out of the window at all of the strange white stuff on the ground. I decided to bundle him up and take him for a ride in the snow on "Toot-Toot." As you will see in the pictures below, he is a pretty laid back boy and didn't get as thrilled with the snow as I had hoped. Oh, well, at least he's cute, right? As ridiculous as it is that I'm home from work today, I am thankful to be spending it with Levi instead of 50 other kids. I would never want the responsibility of calling snow days, so, whoever you are, thanks for the day off (even though i'll have to make it up eventually...)!!!

<img style="display:block; type='text'>Everything

One year ago today I was in a hospital bed holding a part of me, a stranger that I knew I would fall in love with every day for the rest of my life. Honestly, life couldn't be any sweeter. Levi brightens my life with every smile, giggle, kiss, and, believe it or not, every diaper. Last year, I lay in that bed trying to imagine why God decided to entrust me with with such a special little package. My life has continued to be blessed ever since.

This afternoon, I was flipping through his baby book and feeling pressured to fill in every blank and answer every question. Silly, huh? One question in particular prompted me to write this post..."What have I learned this past year?" I'm not really sure how to answer this question. How do you sum up a life altering change in just a few blank lines. As those blank lines stared at me, taunting me to write some fluff, I opted to shut the book, take advantage of Levi's nap time, and snooze a little myself.

I'm not quite sure what I've learned this year...I feel like I've had to learn EVERYTHING. Those of you who haven't experienced it yet, after becoming a mother, I'm convinced you are issued a new brain. Most mothers will testify that they lost brain cells after giving birth. I definitely believe I'm more confused and forgetful than ever before, just ask my mother. However, maybe it isn't because I lost brain cells, maybe it is just because I was given a new brain, a mother's brain. The reason my answer to the question in Levi's baby book is "everything" is because I feel like I, with my new brain, have had to learn everything new...everything a mother needs to know. I've learned how to tell time based off of Levi's cry...time to eat, time to nap, time for a diaper change. I've learned that you don't actually need 8 hours of sleep to function during the day...5-6 hours will do (although this isn't my preference!). I've learned which silly children's songs are perfect for the occasion...whether it is bathtime, bedtime, or diaper time. I've learned how to be creative to distract a wandering, curious boy or simply to cure boredom in places that are not child friendly. I've learned that banging your head repeatedly on a hard surface (wood floors, brick walls, or mama's head) does not always cause pain or need for worry...it is just a way to cope with the day to day stresses of being a little baby boy. I have also learned how a smile from a bright, blue-eyed boy won't only melt the heart of his parents, but also those hurting from the pains of a sinful world. I've learned that the giggles, screams, and silly games of an infant will wash away the stresses of work and any other complaints I selfishly dwell on. I have found a new love for my husband as he assumes the role of father, one of the most important examples and relationships Levi will ever have. I have found a strength in myself I never knew I had. A strength to say "no" to temptations that may prevent me from being the best I can be for Levi. A strength to fight against this world, our media, and all of the things I'm terrified will harm and corrupt my child. I have discovered a growing desire in myself to not settle for mediocrity. I want and need to be the best I can be for Levi. I have also gained a greater appreciation and love for our Savior and the sacrifice God made for his children.

Through much trial and error, I'm sure my new brain will continue to develop. I just hope I won't continue to be so forgetful, absent minded, and confused. Sometimes I just want to slap myself because I do and say some of the most ridiculous things. Maybe all of that has to happen in order push out whatever clouds my mind and keeps me from being "on my game" for Levi. I just can't imagine how much crazier I could get!

All that aside, I just want to wish my growing boy a happy birthday and thank God for knowing exactly what I needed when He blessed us with Levi Allen. My heart has never been so full. I love you baby and thank you for all you've taught me this year.

A New Grinch in Town...

I will begin this post by quoting a letter that was placed in our mailboxes at school last Friday. I assure you, these are not my words...

"Let's take a look at the Christmas issue first. Many of you feel that not allowing our students to celebrate Christmas by doing "fun" things at school is wrong or prison-like. I want you to put yourself in MY shoes. I too stress over eliminating holiday fun from school. However, as an instructional leader, I know that education has changed dramatically. School today is about growing students academically; rigor and accountability. We often discuss how many of our students struggle to read, write or do mathematics. How can making a gingerbread house, creating a Christmas tree or reindeer, watching a Christmas movie, or making Christmas crafts or ornaments resolve those issues? They can't! If you Google "Christmas" or look it up in the dictionary, you will find that Christmas is an annual holiday celebrated on December 25 that marks and honors the birth of Jesus. Christmas is NOT Santa Claus, Christmas trees, stockings, reindeer, ornaments, etc. Those are only symbols or mythological characters created for the holiday. So where does the North Carolina Standard Course of Study address the birth of Jesus---it DOESN'T. And although "Christmas" cannot be taught or symbolized in school, due to the religious context, it can be shown and offered in many ways throughout our school within your own HEART of those you touch on a daily basis. We SHOULD bring the "spirit of Christmas" into our classrooms and school EVERYDAY; not just this time of year."

Can't you just picture the devious, green, furry Grinch stuffing all of Christmas into his large bag and preparing to drive his sleigh off the cliff?

Let me begin by stating that I do agree that one of our main focuses in education is obviously the academic growth of our students, hasn't that always been the purpose of education? I also agree that we should never force our beliefs onto our students. However, how do we ignore Christmas? How do we prevent our children from sharing in the joy of this season? This is our culture here in America. Failure to share these "symbols" with our students is failure to teach them about our culture. Is that not educational? Part of the curriculum of some grade levels include teaching about Christmas around the world. To this, we were told to "teach 'HOLIDAYS' around the world and to leave America out because we already know how we celebrate here." Are you kidding me? So, let me get this straight...we can teach about Kwanzaa, Hanukah, and the beliefs of other cultures, but not our own? Not only has our school refrained from doing any holiday related crafts, they have completely wiped Christmas from our school. We were lead to believe that this is coming down from the state and federal government; however, every other elementary school, that I'm aware of, still have signs of Christmas in their school. In fact, I've been told that even the county office is decorated in twinkling lights. If it is good enough for us, why isn't it good enough for the children we teach? At my school, the decorations from previous years were boxed up and sent home. I no longer work at a school, I am the employee of an institution. Just take a stroll down my hallway. No more Christmas books, trees, wreaths, or even snowmen. These educators are allowed to teach and discuss Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and any other culture celebrating during this season; however, our traditional teachings are not allowed. Hmmm...shameful, isn't it?

Many of you are probably not even aware that this is taking place. Take the time to ask questions, raise awareness, stand firm in what you believe should be taught, shared, and enjoyed in your schools. These decisions should never be left up to a panel of scrooges who enjoyed the smells, sights, and sounds of this magical time of year in their "good 'ol days." Many of our students do not have the resources and/or devoted parents to make gingerbread cookies, sprinkle some glitter on Christmas ornaments, watch a Christmas movie or read a Christmas book. Should they not experience these privileges at school? What fond memories do you relive about your childhood this time of year? Is it what you scored on the end of year tests, what reading strategies you learned in the 2nd grade, or perhaps the 1st time you memorized your multiplication tables? I'm sure it is safe to me to bet that it was probably none of these. I remember singing the "Drummer Boy" and trying to roll my tongue just like my teacher...."ba rumbababummm." I remember standing on the stage with my friends as we depicted the nativity in front of the flashing cameras of many supportive parents. I have fond memories of making ornaments of oranges, cloves, and cinnamon. To this day, when I smell cloves, it takes me back to the innocence of childhood and the joy of Christmas. Ahhhh, I'm so thankful for those memories.

I am not going to be responsible for taking Christmas out of the schools and the hearts of our children. Will you?

Musings on Motherhood

I realize it has been a while since I've posted pics of my 'lil bundle. He's already almost 10 months old and I can hardly imagine how much faster time will fly. I find myself often torn between getting excited about his next phase and wanting to hit the pause button and let time stand still. My baby is almost finished being a baby...this part of motherhood is so hard!

I've recently been realizing the challenge of raising Levi and instilling in him what God calls me to as his mother. I want so much for him. I think mostly of his character and the values he will possess. I pray he always clings to Christ and does not back down when he's challenged because of his beliefs. I want him to realize what is important in life and how to spend his time and I pray, pray, pray he IGNORES what today's media depicts as acceptable. A lot of these thoughts of mine have been building in anticipation of Christmas. As new parents, it is tempting to dive into all the hoop-la of Christmas, but I want to be very careful as to how Matt and I begin our traditions with Levi. I don't want him to ever question the true meaning of Christmas. Most of these thoughts are the result of a recent staff meeting at the school where I work. I won't even get started on what that's all about....that is another blog in itself...stay tuned!

Here's some recent pics of Levi Buttonfly. Enjoy and have a Happy <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: type='text'>Dear "Anonymous"...

This post is the result of some interesting comments I received on my last post. I never imagined one brief collection of my thoughts after the election would spark so many comments from anonymous readers. Let me begin by apologizing for any offense I caused to any of you who frequent my blog...that was not my intention. I was preparing to sit down tonight and respond to the first anonymous comment and then saw that there were several more...some attacking me and one siding with me...I'm not sure what I should respond to first.

I will begin by clearing up some misunderstanding...I never stated that our President Elect was "immoral." I was referring to the "change" that he has promised us....I believe his ideals are "immoral." I know nothing about him as a person, as none of us do, and would not be bold enough to judge him and the way he lives his life. I can assure you I am not without sin and I certainly will not be casting any stones. If I came across as "judgmental," I again apologize. I was also accused of being "close-minded." If by close-minded you mean believing in ONE truth and ONE way and not tolerating anything other than that truth, then maybe I am. As a Christian, I believe that the Word of God, the Bible, is full of truths, promises, and instructions on how we should live on this Earth and, fail as I many times do, I try to live my life according to these truths. When I referred to Obama's administration as being "immoral" and "radical," I was mainly referring to his stance on abortion. His stance on abortion conflicts entirely with what God teaches us in the Bible and what He commands of us....it is immoral and is unacceptable, not by my standards, but by God's. When I claimed that "my heart was sick as I imagined the immoral "change" that would soon darken the doors of the White House," I was referring to our nation's unborn children that would lose their right to live because our new president views unwanted pregnancies as "punishment."

As an American, despite my disagreements with our nation's choice, I can assure you I will support him and his administration....and, as I stated in my previous post, I will continue to pray for him and his family. I am not a sore loser....I never have been. I know God is in control and if it wasn't His will for our country to elect Mr. Obama, then it wouldn't be so.

"Change"

For those of you who are in mourning, as I most certainly am, hold tight to what I keep reminding myself...God is in control and He has always been. My heart is sick as I imagine the immoral and unpatriotic "change" that will soon darken the doors of the White House. Thankfully, my Creator is not elected into office and will always prevail, despite how crafty His opponent is. Stand with me and commit to be in prayer for our country, the men and women who serve so passionately, our nation's children (born and unborn), and for the radicals that will soon be taking their places in our nation's capital. I know that God has a plan and it is perfect in every way. He, without question, is the "change" we need and nobody, liberal or conservative, can bring about a change that is greater than what He has in store for us.
Rollins 1st Annual Halloween Bash

If any of you read Matt's blog you are well aware of the fog fiasco at our Halloween party on Friday night. My version of the story is somewhat different...

As most parties go, the men stayed outside with their smokes and stories, humoring each other in the freezing cold, while their much more sensible halves stayed inside listening out for the sleeping babies. Sometime late in the night, while we were helping ourselves to heaping scoops of Lindy's bean dip, the men decided to come inside and with them came "the fog." Now, I, like Matt, was shamefully excited about having a fog machine at our party. Unlike him, I care very little for Halloween, but I'm all for setting the mood, and I thought the fog machine would do the trick. I soon forgot about the fog machine and the creepy entrance it was supposed to provide because it hadn't worked all night...until the boys decided to come into our world. They, with the least of concern, brought "the fog" into the apartment. Now us ladies, thinking of the sleeping babes, were concerned about the effect the smokiness would have on the little ones. While we where sitting aroundasking the inevitable questions, "the fog" filled the room like a blanket and our eyes started to burn. We were told there was nothing toxic in the fog and not to worry...even when the question was asked about "the fog" setting off the fire alarm, once again, we were told not to worry. Shortly after the men (among them was the Joker, Ron Burgundy, the Big Bad Wolf, and Billy Ray Cyrus) went back outside to entertain themselves, I started towards the door to investigate this problem they left with us. About halfway down the hall, it happened. The fire alarm was screaming and so was Levi. I was fanning "the fog" with a broom under the alarm, which did nothing, and I kept turning off the alarm, which also did nothing. After all of our effort, and unplugging the cursed fog machine, the sound of sirens coming down main street caught our attention. Before I could make it to the windows, which were now open with "the fog" escaping, the trucks were pulling up and the people at Monkeez Brew, including my concerned parents, were crowding the sidewalk. I tried to shout out to the firemen before Matt made it to the window, because I knew if they were not already angry about being called out to handle our fog problem, they really would be hot when they saw the Joker hanging out the window. Despite my effort, the Joker made it to the window and his shouting now accompanied mine which I'm sure was very confusing to our rescuers below. I just gave up and joined our guests inside as we laughed hysterically at the situation and at the creepy face the firemen were conversing with. Hopefully next year's Halloween party will not be as eventful. I do agree with Matt, I think next year, we take the chaos to someone else's house.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto type='text'>Captured

Three years ago tomorrow, on a perfect October afternoon, the kind that makes you long for this time of year, I walked down a grassy aisle, in a white dress, and married my best friend. I'm not really sure that I've ever fallen for the whole "love at first sight" spill, or any mushy, gushy stuff for that matter, but there's something about my Matt that has made my life so complete, even when we were "just friends." He is a part of me...all of the parts that were missing, God has made whole through Matt. I guess that's how it should be when you choose to love someone. It should be someone who, pardon the overused movie line, but someone "who completes" you....and for me, that has always been Matt. For our anniversary, I'm staying with my parents and Matt is lying awake (at 4 a.m.) in his hotel room in an Italian vineyard...perfect, huh? I won't bore you all with our love story, I just wanted to send Matt my love from across the miles. Love you babe and thank you for choosing to spend the last 3 years, and your life, with me. You have always been my soulmate.

"You are mine beloved and I am yours to keep.

Our Weekend...Full of Goodness!

I think Matt would agree with me in saying this was one of the best weekends we've had in a while, and as strange as it may sound, we spent most of our weekend apart. Matt spent some much needed time in solitude in Sparta where, I believe, he was refreshed and renewed in a way only Christ can bring about. I'm hoping he'll blog on his experiences...both dangerous and life changing (hint, hint...)! I spent some quality time with Levi and family. Levi had a great week last week (he slept through the night twice!!) and although he was sick this weekend, it was just a continuation of such a great week. It could only have been more perfect if Matt would have been here. Levi and I slept in, played, rode "Toot-Toot" (as you'll see below), visited with family at Monkeez Brew, and snuggled, snuggled, snuggled! I am aware of how quickly baby boys learn that it isn't cool to snuggle with their mommies, so I took every opportunity to get my fix!!! He is doing so much...he is waving "bye, bye" and imitating "mama, dada, and bye-bye." I'm now trying to teach him to sign "more" during dinner time. He thinks this is pretty funny and we mostly end up giggling the rest of the meal. His personality is so precious...I believe we love him more and more every day. I can't wait to fall in love with him all over again tomorrow...

I'm back (probably for a short while...)

Hello blogging world! It seems it has been so long since I've posted anything....I've missed my time in front of the computer screen and have missed sharing my thoughts. Unfortunately, there hasn't been much to post. I am now in the swing of things at work...serving kids, paperwork, serving kids, paperwork, paperwork, PAPERWORK! When I come home, the last place I want to be is in front of the computer. Some days, I'd love to sneak away and blog at work, but that would be a poor use of my time, and not to mention, against the "rules." When I get home in the afternoon, it is all about my 'lil family. I love being at home....cooking with Matt and playing with Levi...I am so blessed. Levi is starting to "play" now and I'm really enjoying it. Up until this week, I had a total of 3 toys in the house, only one of which Levi could play with. So...I made a K-mart run on the way home from work and bought him a couple of toys. I stood on the toy aisle FOREVER, desperately searching for something made anywhere other than China...no such luck. He could care less though, he loves playtime and he plays so hard.

I am loving this stage of his life and I feel like I miss so much of it while I'm at work. Not that it is an option right now, but I spend so much time in my mind battling between would I want to stay home full-time or continue being a working mom. I LOVE to work...I come from a family of hardworking people and it has always been my nature to enjoy work, whether paid or unpaid. I also really enjoy my job, good days and bad, and am so grateful to be in the place and profession that I'm in. With that said, I'd also love to invest all of that energy in my baby, my home, my husband. Patience, patience, patience...in His time....

My Fog

Not that any of you are anxiously awaiting my next post, but if you are, I apologize for the delay. With good reason, I've been in a fog and can hardly process what I'm thinking...forget trying to post on my thoughts. School is back in session which means I'm back at work and delirious as ever. Gone are the days of taking my time and enjoying my leisure start to the day. I'm up before the rooster crows and going strong until evening (and I'm still getting up with Levi once or twice a night). So, needless to say, I have nothing to post...I think I'm losing brain cells and can't focus long enough to type anything meaningful. Soon, I will adjust to being a working mom, the fog will clear, and I will be able to be more consistent with this blogging thing (which I enjoy more than I ever thought I would have...thanks Linders!).

Oh, completely random thought (as most of them are these days)...yeah for Baby Levi...I think we see the start of his first tooth!

Here's a couple of pics from his photo shoot on the 15th...I was so proud of him, he was perfect as always!
<img style="display:block; BABY!". Yes, today Matt turns another year older (I'm still 4 days wiser...) and he's celebrating his birthday at a convention in Atlanta, so send him happy birthday wishes...I know he'd love it!

I'm just missing him while he's away and wanted to spend this post celebrating my dearest friend, my husband. For those of you who have been with us on our long journey, you know that we truly are best friends....we have been for half of our lives...hard to believe, but true. Yes, Matt has been charming me now for 14 years and he keeps on going! Here's a list of what I love about my husband....

1. He loves me all the time. Even when I wake up with my hair all a mess and wearing who knows what (usually covered in dried spit up!).

2. He absolutely cannot listen to anything I say while playing with Levi because he's so involved with the 'lil man (this actually does drive me nuts when I have something important to say...).

3. He is one of the most dependable people I know. He rarely makes promises he cannot keep.

4. He is pretty stinkin' hilarious with his random thoughts and freaky dreams. I'm not sure where he comes up with this stuff, but he keeps me laughing.

5. Speaking of dreams...he always manages to remember his very disturbed, detailed oriented dreams, and loves to share them with me in the morning. His mind can be a crazy thing...

6. He is a hard worker and takes pride in the work he does. In the past year, Matt has left his career in law enforcement and started an entirely new career in sales. I have been so proud of him and how he's adjusted to the changes and the sacrifices he's made.

7. He is good with his hands and if he doesn't know how to do something, he tries to figure it out.

8. He is superb at choosing the perfect card and writing lots of good stuff on the inside. If he makes a mistake, he just turns the scribble into an interesting picture...sometimes it is a sailboat, skull & bones, fish bones, heart...I never know what to expect!

9. He is the least pickiest person I know when it comes to food. He'll eat whatever I cook and pretend to love it. As long as there is meat in it, I usually can't go wrong.

10. He is the best person to be with when experiencing something or somewhere new...he's like a child. He just can't contain his excitement sometimes...

11. He loves every kind of music...from 80's love songs to eardrum exploding rock to techno to lullabies. I'm not quite sure he's in to show tunes or rap...but everything else is pretty much game.

12. He will try anything once.

13. He is one of the bravest people I know and because of that, I always feel safe with him.

14. He undoubtedly loves the Lord and strives to please him as a father, in our marriage, and in his daily walk.

If you have anything to add to my list please do so on my comments!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABY!!!

Our Company from NY

Our dear friend, Rusty, came to visit this past week and was finally able to meet Levi. He has lived in NY for about 10 years doesn't get many opportunities throughout the year to come to NC. Matt was very excited to introduce Levi to his best friend and it was such a joy to finally watch him with our son. Levi warmed up to him right away. I know Levi is friendly with everyone, but he really took interest in Rusty as soon as he scooped him up...Levi must have sensed how special Rusty is to our family. Levi thought he was so special that one evening, he christened him with his type='text'>Back to School

Today I had my first taste of what I'll be experiencing starting this coming Monday....WORK. Not that being a mommy all day isn't work, but it is a different kind of work and something that I haven't exactly perfected when I have to juggle my job as a mommy and my job as Mrs. R. These past couple of weeks I've been telling everyone how much I love my job and how going back won't be that bad...yada, yada, yada! Well, today was my first day back on the 8-3:30 day, without Levi (and pump in tote). After sitting through meeting after meeting and learning all of the paperwork changes I get to painfully fumble through this school year, I have to say....I'm not sure I'm liking it so much.

...Of course, being back with the crew I work with is wonderful...they're so great and I don't think I'd love my job half as much without them. I guess I do miss my students, a teeny-tiny bit, and I'm looking forward to hearing of their summertime adventures...which, unfortunately, I'm certain consist of mostly wasting away in front of some way too mature video game. Also, I must confess, I'm one of those nuts that loves the "back to school" time of year...the smell of freshly cut grass (not that it isn't cut all summer long...it just has a different smell when school starts. I'm not sure why...) and the smell of new pencils....I love it! I also find it so entertaining to see how well everyone...teachers, parents, and students...get along at the beginning of the year. That warm, fuzzy relationship doesn't last long for some, but at the beginning of school, everyone gets a fresh start.

Okay, I guess going back may not be that terrible of a thing. Although I can think of many reasons I'm not looking forward to walking down that hallway and unlocking the door to my freezing classroom, my cave, I'll keep those 'lil thoughts to myself. Let's keep positive, right?

I am grateful for the roles the Lord has led me to play and I will try my hardest to keep a smile on my face....and no tears in my eyes! We'll see what the next couple of weeks hold....

Home...

Matt and our Romania team returned late Sunday night to the welcoming arms of family and friends anxiously awaiting to bear hug the person they had missed so much over the past ten days. I was right there with them...butterflies and all. From my experience, returning home from a mission trip is, for lack of a better word, bittersweet. You long to see your loved ones and share with them all that has happened; however, in all reality, words will never be enough to share your experience, so often, you remain speechless....this was the case with our Seniors that night. I could see the tears that were being held back, not from being homesick, but from the relationships they left behind in the mountains of Romania. I'm not even going to attempt to share what they experienced....please take a moment and read Matt's post on the trip. I do have to echo what he said in regards to our Seniors. We have been blessed to be their Sunday School teachers and, as they prepare to leave within the next few weeks, they need to be commended for serving Christ and not themselves, for being available and for stepping out of their comfort zones...in Romania and here in Davidson County. These students will do great things...God-size things...we love you all!<div one of those teenage relationships who mark every month with an anniversary, but I have to share that today is Levi's half year birthday. Six months ago our world changed in a way greater than I could have ever imagined. When I take a moment to try and absorb the whirlwind these past few months have been, I stand in awe. I have to thank our Maker for blessing us with such a wonderful son and for giving him to us to take care of on this earth. Many times I have to remind myself that he's mine only for a short time on this earth. Like any mother, I have countless dreams and hopes for my little boy. It is a cruel world and evil is lurking around every corner, but there is good out there and I pray he stays out of the dark and in the light...

My prayer is that he, above all things, has a personal relationship with Christ. I pray he is good to the core and that he loves our Father and seeks His will daily. I pray that he always respects women and his elders and that he's a good listener. I pray he is a thinker and doesn't make rash decisions. I pray he's comfortable in his own skin and has no desire to work at following the latest trends. I pray he seeks out friends with similar qualities. I pray he is always polite, even when others are not. I pray his role models are Christ, Matt, Chad (my brother), Chris (my brother-in-law), Pappy (my father), his Papaw (Matt's father), my Papaw and Pop...these are the greatest men I know and I pray Levi will consider himself blessed to be in their company. I pray he's humble, kind to animals, loves God's beautiful creation, and feels responsible to take care of all the Lord blesses him with. I pray he seeks a godly woman who will offer him uninhibited love and support. I pray he willingly serves others and has a heart for the less fortunate.

I know these are such heavy requests for a little, innocent boy. I also know that one day (all too soon I'm afraid) he will be a man and more than anything, I pray his eyes are on Christ during this journey.

Through your triumphs and failures, I pray your eyes are on your Maker, little one...

Home Away from Home

I apologize for the slack in posts. I've been staying with my parents this week while Matt's out of town and we've been incredibly busy. I've been helping my mother around the house with cleaning out my old bedroom and purging a heap of useless stuff. It is amazing what you accumulate and how you think you'll never get rid of it, then one day, all of a sudden, you want to light it all on fire because it disgusts you to even imagine going through it all. Despite my impatience, I've finished and what a great feeling, although I'm incredibly ashamed at myself for all the junk that I've held onto for so long.

We've also been doing some gardening and enjoying the fruits of our labor (well, okay...my Dad's labor...). We've had fresh cucumbers, corn, green beans, tomatoes, cantaloupe, and grapes (my favorite!). It has always been such a good feeling to be at my parent's home. I love the outdoors and Matt and I just don't get to enjoy it as much in the city. Soon, God willing, we'll be building down the hill from my parent's home and will get to enjoy our bare feet in the grass more often. It has also been nice having help with Levi (you know how grandparents can be). I feel like we've been on a mini vacation in our home away from home. Although it has been wonderful spending time with my parents and just doing this and that around their home, I do look forward to Matt coming home...I miss having him around. Plus, Levi is changing so much everyday. I wonder how different he'll seem when Matt returns Sunday night.

Here's some pics from today...

This afternoon Levi and I were snappin' beans on the front porch and I think the combination of the exersaucer and the heat wore him out. He fell asleep in seconds and apparently put his pacifier in his mouth. The pictures below are of how I found him after I finished snapping beans.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" wedding anniversary. To celebrate, we went downtown T-ville to the summer "concert" series at the gazebo. Can I get a "woo-hoo?" I think the only exciting thing happening was with my little boy. Here he is with his Pappy. Take notice...he's sitting up a little bit!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px type='text'>Romania Team Update

This afternoon, I was able to talk to my Matt, via Skype, and was glad to hear that the Romania Team, despite extreme weariness, are doing well. They arrived in Budapest yesterday and did some sightseeing for a few hours, which I'm not quite sure they'll remember considering their lack of sleep from traveling...jet lag is a beast! Today they drove into Romania and are staying in the city of Oradea. Tomorrow (well actually in a few hours for them), they will travel to the village where the children attending their camp are from and will go to church and eat with them. Monday morning they will go back to the village, get the children, and then off to camp until Saturday morning. It still amazes me that these parents, many of whom are Greek Orthodox, will allow their children to board a bus, full of strange Americans, and send their children off to a Christian camp. Praise the Lord! This is such an incredible opportunity for anybody to experience, but I'm especially excited that our students get to share in the joy of teaching others about Christ before they go off to college. Many of these Romanian children have not heard the Bible stories we grew up hearing and for some, they have not even heard of Christ. Please be in prayer for these children, the church in the village (I know the name, but I'm not even going to attempt to spell it...), and for our team of students, youth workers, and adults as they minister to these children within this upcoming week. It is a very exhausting camp, not to mention the fact that you never really recover from the time change (they're 7 hours ahead of us), so also be in prayer for the team as they play, teach, craft, and mold these children with energy they never knew they had. Also be in prayer for the homes that these children go back to after camp is over. Many of these children will make professions of faith and then return home to a family of unbelievers and a community who does not know the love of Christ. God will do amazing things in the lives of the Romanian children, their families, community, and in the lives of those serving...He is already and always does...

This is a picture of the camp in August, 2006

Simple Reminders

Probably about a year ago, Pastor Michael used an illustration in the service that has been embedded in my mind ever since. He invited one of his sons up on the stage and had him stand facing a cross. Michael explained to the congregation how much he loved the church and those in the audience that day, but that he would never, NEVER, be able to sacrifice his son for any of us. There was silence, complete silence. I'm sure everyone was thinking of their loved ones and admitting to themselves that no matter the cause, they'd never agree to give up the life of their loved one for anybody.

Although that illustration made me appreciate God's sacrifice of His son, until Levi was born, I don't believe I fully understood that sacrifice. Let me back up and make this perfectly clear, I don't think my mind will ever wrap itself around the sacrifice made or the love that Christ had for us sinners when He chose to lay down His life for us. Now that I'm a parent, I guess I should say I have a greater appreciation of that sacrifice.

Saturday night Levi cried in a different way than he ever has. He stared deep in my eyes and was sobbing, uncontrollable sobbing. Tears were streaming down his face, his lips were quivering, he was more upset than I have yet to experience. I was overwhelmed with emotion while trying to console him. He wasn't hurt or scared, just tired and hungry. We spent the entire day in Charlotte visiting friends and it was well past his bedtime, so he was simply exhausted. Even though I knew he was okay and I knew that within a few moments, I would be able to calm him down, I was devastated to hear him so upset. It was then that I was reminded of the crucifixion of Christ. Matt and I raised the question...how did God give up His only son to be publicly tortured and put to death for us? Levi was crying out to me and all I wanted was to make everything alright. I don't want any pain, embarrassment, harassment, or anything negative to happen to Levi. God loves us so much that, even though we are sinners, He gave his one and only son so that we could spend eternity with Him in heaven. Like I said earlier, I'll never be able to wrap my simple, immature mind around God's love for us. Have you thanked Him today?

"But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners." Romans 5:8 (NLT)

A Day of Firsts: First Cut, First Cold

As I shared yesterday, today was Levi's first haircut. His wings are gone and in a plastic bag for keepsake purposes. Not only did Levi have his first haircut today, but he also has his first cold :-(. I know, I know, how cruel am I for taking him to get his hair cut at only 5 1/2 months with a runny nose...I'm terrible. His MD suggested saline solution for his stuffy nose, so, 2 pharmacies later, we begin treatment. I was very glad to discover that this saline solution also came with a nasal aspirator, as our current one isn't very efficient in sucking out the...well, you know. But, what I didn't find in the box was a straight jacket which you need in order to administer the saline solution. Not that I would ever be able to strap down my son...I say this in order to give you all a mental image of how incredibly difficult it is to squirt something into an infant's teeny, tiny nose while he is turning backflips, rolling over, and karate kicking me all at once. You mothers out there I'm sure understand my dilemma. Did I even get the solution in his nose, probably not...I don't believe it ever reach its destination. I'm sure he swallowed some and of course most of his lower face was wet with what I'm assuming was the solution mixed with tears. Poor baby! He can't sleep or eat very well because both of these require breathing which is interrupted by his over abundance of....well, once again, you know. All I want to do is hold him and love him...he is so pitiful.

As for his haircut....wonderful experience, despite his cold. Lori, his stylist, was extremely careful and patient with him. At least he didn't perform the same as he does while I'm trying to squirt the saline in his nose, if that was the case, he would look brutal! As you'll see, he looks just as precious now as he did before and, hopefully, not much different.

Good Times

Can I just say that I'm lovin' mommy time with Levi! We've had such a good week and it is only Tuesday! As you'll see in the slideshow below, we spent some time at my mother's ("Koko") and with Mimi, my grandmother. Today, Levi and I joined Lindsey (one of my very best friends) and her daughter, Layla, for our first play date. Despite my flat tire (the 2nd one I've had in a month I should add...), we had a great time. Levi tried out the swings on the playground and then got to meet Layla's bear, Harvey...Good times! Layla was such a good friend. She kept trying to get Levi to play her games even though all he did was wiggle on the floor, eat his hands, and squeal every now and then. I guess he made an okay impression with Layla...she did manage to give him a couple of kisses and try to share her lunch!

Tomorrow, I'll be blogging about Levi's 1st haircut :-(. Daddy, and others, think the time has come to cut off Levi's wings, so we're going to get a little trim tomorrow evening. For kicks, I styled Levi's hair during bath time this evening to celebrate his stylish moments. Lindsey suggested I post some silly pics before we get his hair cut tomorrow...

"Gracias!" (thanks for the title Grace)

For those of you who don't know, Matt and I help teach the 12th graders at Rich Fork Baptist. What a privilege it is to be associated with this group of students. They bring us such joy and in all honesty, they teach us. In today's society, our teens are taught to please and serve themselves, but our students are practicing a different kind of servanthood. They have decided to follow Christ's example and serve Him through loving others. Several of our students, along with others from our church, are going to Romania a week from Thursday. They have organized a camp for 40-50 kids, ranging from 6 years to approximately 20 years old, and will be sharing Christ through recreation, Bible stories, arts/crafts, and good old-fashion fellowship. I was blessed 2 years ago when I had the opportunity to go to Romania and participate in a similar camp. It was a wonderful experience and my life was greatly enriched as I know there's will be as well.

This past week, our Senior class quickly organized a last minute yard sale on Saturday to clean out Chris and Lindy's garage after their move to Kenya. (Side note...they sold their house in approximately 3 weeks...praise God!) Team Thompson offered their remaining treasures for us to sell towards our Romania trip (thank you, thank you!). All of our students have already paid for their trip, so we decided to use whatever money we made to meet a unknown need in Romania. We sold $400+ worth of stuff and cannot wait to see where the Lord directs the team to use this money.

Please be in prayer for our students and the adults traveling with them as they prepare to leave for Romania. For most of our students, this will be their first mission trip and their first time out of the country. Please pray for the children they will be ministering to, that the camp would run smoothly, that the team will see a need for the yard sale money, and for their safe travel. I will be anxiously awaiting their full report when they come home. Unfortunately, I will not be going with the team this year, however, I'll try to persuade Matt to submit a post on their trip when they return.

Thanks to Emily, Grace, Kevin and JJ who all made it out on such a short notice on Saturday and to Team Thompson for donating your things to sell...we love and miss you guys! I also want to thank the rest of our SS class for just being so great!

Here are some pictures from our yard sale on Saturday. You toss and turn all night with these images in your head and you wake up wondering if you ever slept. I wonder if this is what happened many times in the Bible leading people to seek out someone to interpret their dreams. I believe God lays things so heavily on our hearts to shake some sense in to us in hopes to spring us into action. Before Lindy left for Kenya, she gave me a book, Voices of Sudan by David Johnson. He is a photographer, teaching in Charlotte, who has traveled throughout the Sudan photographing the people he states "can no longer speak for themselves." The book is a little over a hundred pages consisting of photographs and stories from those trapped in the genocide that is continuing to violently rip apart a country. Naturally, I have an interest in Africa because of Chris and Lindy's service there, but, my interest in the Sudan genocide began several years ago when I read a book by three "Lost Boys."

I do believe it is becoming popular these days to have an interest in world affairs, especially in Africa. Angelia Jolie, Bono, Ben Affleck, Oprah, and several other pop culture icons are trying to raise awareness of the various plights the people of the Dark Continent suffer and, regardless of their reasons or intentions, I'm sure their efforts have raised money and awareness. What these people need along with water, medicine, education, and peace, is the Savior. I pray God protects and blesses the efforts of those who give up everything to serve Him in these dark places. For those of us who are not called to be missionaries in Africa, what are we doing? Are we being obedient in praying for these people and the missionaries that live among them? Are there groups or efforts you could give your time or money to that aim at meeting the needs of the Sudanese while introducing Christ to them? What is happening right now, every minute of the day, is too disturbing and sickening for many of us to think of. I believe that is why I was tossing and turning throughout the night. While I have water to swim in, wash my face, and water my flowers, many Sudanese risk their lives to taste. I have my family and they are safe. I can kiss, bathe, and feed Levi, while dreaming of his bright future. Right now, Levi is lying next to me without a care in the world and I'm so grateful for that. Meanwhile, many of the Sudanese do not know where their families are, let alone if they are alive, while others have to relive the nightmare of having their children snatched from their arms...or worse. The magnitude and severity of the reality these people live numbs me and it all seems hopeless. But, we know there is hope.

Why am I blogging this? Because...this has clouded my mind and my dreams, as it should. I admit, I don't know what my role is. What can I, in my simple and safe life, do for this people group? We have a responsibility and I'm praying the Lord will show me what my responsibility is to these people. What's yours?

For more information, please go to http://onlyservants.blogspot.com/ and click on the November posts under Chris and Lindy's blog archives. To find out more about Voices of Sudan, go to http://www.silentimages.org/silentimages/. Please continue praying for the efforts in the Sudan and all of Africa. Also be in prayer for missionaries all across the world.

As David Johnson reminds us in Voices of Sudan...

"Speak up for those who cannot speak up for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute." Proverbs 31:8 (NIV)

Feels Good

***I apologize for the delay in submitting this post. We were at the Outer Banks during the week of the 4th and although I tried to update my blog on my vacation, my attempts were unsuccessful due to a poor internet connection. Oh well...I'm sure none of you were anxiously waiting for my next post anyway...

Family vacations have always been one of my most favorite things. For lack of a better way to describe them, they just make me feel good! I can't think of a better way to let off some steam and enjoy true fellowship and with my family. We sleep in (well for those without a 5 month old), toss grooming aside, cook our meals together, and just cut loose for a full week. We typically vacation during the week of July 4th in Avon, NC where my parents own a beach house. We spend the week lazily fishing, soaking up the sun, eating massive amounts of food (one of my other favorite pastimes), and finish the week with a half hour fireworks display, compliments of the Avon Pier next door to our home. This year we went with my parents, my brother and his family, and Auntie Lynda. My roommate from college lives a couple of hours away in VA Beach, so this year she and her family rented a condo and celebrated the 4th with us as well. Levi seemed to enjoy his first vacation...he honestly slept through most of it as you'll see in the slideshow to the right. Enjoy!

Angels Among Us

Being at home with Levi has been such a joy this summer. Without question, I enjoy spending time with him, playing with him, smelling him, kissing him, but my time off also allows me time to do other things. Yesterday afternoon Levi and I went with my Mimi to visit her sister Louise in the nursing home. What a blessing it was. Louise and their other sister have lived next door to Mimi for years until her other sister remarried. After the marriage, Louise moved, without complaint, to a nursing home. As a child, Louise suffered several seizures brought upon by spiked temperatures which resulted from a mosquito bite. Strange, huh??? This left her mentally disabled and unable to live by herself. Despite her disability, Louise is an incredible woman. She, without question, is an angel among us. She has the kindest disposition and never once complains, not even about the fact that she had just had a fairly large seizure at lunch yesterday. As a child, I remember playing with her, making silly faces, and laughing...Louise loves to laugh. In fact, she got herself tickled yesterday and couldn't stop! What a heart she has and such a peace. I'm convinced there's not a finer woman. We often push people aside who don't appear "normal" to us instead of taking time to learn from them and their character traits. Louise could teach us a lot about loving life, loving her family, and loving her Lord. She doesn't sweat the small stuff and is just happy to be anywhere. Thank you God for Louise and for the angel you created her to be.

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS'; Oh yes, my plants and how poor of a gardener I am. The plants on my patio struggle in the sun most of the day with very little break from the heat. Matt and I do make an effort to water them daily, but as for the flowers in my yard, they're usually left to fend for themselves. I have found this summer that no matter how often I water my flowers on the patio, they mostly look pathetic and some have already died. Last night, however, there was sweet relief. God watered my garden. This morning, everything, including my flowers looked refreshed, renewed, and the brightest they've looked all season. I love how a good watering from the best gardener washes everything clean and makes it as good as new.

When I examine my life, I don't feel as fulfilled, fresh, and renewed when others water my garden, whether that be people or things of this world. The times when I'm actively pursuing God's will for my life, through reading His word and in time spent in prayer, I do feel revived and new again. Isn't it the greatest thing to experience a life changed by God? A friend of ours recently made a profession of faith and decided that living in God's will was much more fulfilling and permanent than things of this world. He decided to let God be his gardener and it was a beautiful sight! I could almost smell the fresh wet soil, ready for growth. We should soak up all God has to offer, because in the end, without Christ, there's nothing. Well, maybe there's a dried leaf or crumpled petals, an indication of a life that was once full of beauty and promise, but is no more. I certainly don't want to be like the fried vegetation on my patio, I want to be vibrant and full of life. I want to strive daily to let God grow my garden and see what He can produce in me. This is how I want my garden to grow...

"I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you." John 15:1-3 (NIV)

And I still digress...here are some pics from this weekend...enjoy!

To Blog or Not to Blog...

I am not naturally a conformer and I don't like the bandwagons people jump on with the newest craze...in this case....BLOGGING. However, this idea of sharing my daily experiences, as intriguing as they are, is growing on me. The main reason that I've decide to jump aboard is because of a promise I made to my sister-in-law, Lindy. Lindy and Chris are leaving tomorrow on an adventure for Christ...they have accepted the call into missions in Nairobi, Kenya and will be making a home there until they are called back to the states. Matt and I feel like we're losing our right arms and we're right-handed which make it very difficult to function normally, but we'll manage. We're not promised another day on this earth or another day with Chris and Lindy and we certainly don't deserve the time we've had. Our friendship with "Team Thompson" goes beyond family ties and beyond best friends...it is a spiritual connection and a relationship that we value deeply. And how is it awesome to share in such in this experience despite the sadness? This is my first blog and it will be short. Chris and Lindy are here at our house, not to say "goodbye," but to say "see ya later," and we can't wait...we miss them already!
